Victor Von Hook
I thought I'd jump on the Disney/Marvel mash-up bandwagon in honor of Disney purchasing Marvel Comics for $4 Billion. I'm interested to see what comes of it.
In case you can't tell, it's Captain Hook as Victor Von Doom (Dr. Doom).

BE STILL!
This is my version of Max taming the wild things from "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. I submitted it to the Terrible Yellow Eyes blog. Hopefully he'll like it and post it. It's a very cool blog. You should go check it out.

Parker: The Hunter by Richard Stark & Darwyn Cooke
Get this book. It's fantastic. Darwyn Cooke's graphic adaptation of Richard Stark's classic crime novel is dead on. Seriously. Go to your local comic shop or Amazon and get it today. You'll be glad you did.

Manly Adventure! at Modofly
Modofly just added one of my new designs to their sketch/notebook line. This is the cover spread and a mock-up of what the actual book will look like..
The quality on these books is top notch. So, hurry and buy one so you can be the first kid on your block to have one of these fine manly sketchbooks!

Subway [to] Roma
Howdy folks! Sorry I haven't been posting for a couple of weeks, but I took a (much needed) two week vacation to Italy. I'm heading to Comic-Con next week, so posts may be a little infrequent until I return. But, I'll make it up to you. I promise!
This was taken in the subway going from the Vatican to the Colosseum.

Monsters, Mayhem & Doom!
Please join OhNo!Doom in welcoming Chicago artist Jason Chalker, aka Manly Art. Jason is an illustrator, graphic designer and was also an animator on Richard Linklater's feature film A Scanner Darkly.
Come see how Mr. Chalker transforms Oh No! Doom’s gallery into a precocious pulp paradise of monstrous, maniacal and all-new manly art.
You WILL have a good time and you WILL be manlier from the experience. Don’t worry ladies... you won’t be manlier, you’ll just have a greater appreciation of all things manly.

Child of Doom
Here's the final painting based on the sketch I posted previously. I used a reference photo I shot downtown (check the location tag to see where) for the setting to give it some atmosphere. This is the first time I've ever painted buildings, so it was a fun challenge. I'm pretty happy with how it came out overall.

Bloodfest Sevens 2009
Well, It's that time of year again. Here's this years t-shirt design for the annual Huns RFC Bloodfest Sevens tournament in Austin, TX. This year I decided to take a little break from the rugby pin-up girls and show the true nature of rugby. To quote my dad... "I went to a fight the other day and a rugby game broke out.".

The Martian Girl
Here's another mini-painting for my show at Oh No! Doom. I've finally switched subjects and thought I'd give a nod to Tim Burton's "Mars Attacks".

Roz
I was on the Red Line this morning and saw this woman. I thought she had an interesting face at first. Then she started to seem familiar. Then, it hit me! She was a dead ringer for Roz from Monsters, Inc.. I think it's pretty uncanny.

Duro
Here's another mini painting. This one is of a Duro from the cantina scene in Star Wars. This piece will be part of my Oh No! Doom show in late June.

Jawas
Here's another mini Star Wars painting. This time, it's the Jawas. I like them because you think they're all cute and bumbling, but you'd better watch out when your back's turned.

BatMun Noir
Rotofugi had a really fun event Sunday. Kid Robot supplied a bunch of free Munny Mobiles and they had a "Mini Munny Mobile Decorating Party" that was free and open to anyone. This is my Adam West era Batman. It took me about 2.5 hours. It was a lot of fun being around so many people creating at the same time. Thanks Kirby!
You can see more photos in my Flickr stream. Also, John over at ToyCutter gave BatMun a nod.

Grand Moff Tarkin
Here's another Star Wars mini painting. Man, Peter Cushing was a scary looking guy when he wanted to be.

Bridget Bardot
This weeks Austin Sketch Squad theme was "France". While, yes, my first thought was "French maid, oolala", I thought I'd do a drawing of one of France's most famous, if not notorious, actresses.

Disguise
The theme for this weeks Austin Sketch Squad challenge was "Disguise". I was feeling a little goofy tonight, so I drew a squid in disguise. A squid who apparently has a flair for the vaudevillian.

Samson & Delilah
This is my painting for the Old Testament part of "An Art Show of Biblical Proportions" happening in Austin Easter weekend. I treated it like a cover for a pulp novel. So many of the stories in the Old Testament would make great pulp stories.
Sol Finkelstein was a smut publisher who found God later in life. While he had a change of heart, he didn't know how to change careers, so he came up with a compromise. Pulp stories based on the Bible. This surprisingly successful series was called "The Torrid Torah- Sultry Tales from the Bible".

It's a catch up week at the Austin Sketch Squad so I decided to work on the Graffiti Tag challenge. I like where my Manly Art tag is going, so I'll probably clean it up and finish it.

Sketchbooks!
Jordan has posted the next generation of sketchbooks/notebooks over at Modofly. They have developed their own custom book, and now the covers are in full color! The samples I have seen look really top-notch. I have two designs in this round, so go check 'em out (click on the images to go to their pages). If my stuff isn't your cup of tea, there are fantastic books from the likes of Jason Limon, Dan May, Susan Rudat and many other talented artists.

I woke up to a little surprise this morning. I knew we might get some snow, but I had no idea it would be this much! It definitely makes for a nice cozy Sunday.

Meet Chewie & Pierre. The newest editions to my family. Lisa picked them up in Grosse Pointe when she went home last weekend. They are a little over 6 weeks old. They're settling in nicely.

Rabbit... Jessica, that is...
This weeks theme for the Austin Sketch Squad is "rabbit". I took a page from Mr. Stovall's book and went the sexy route.

Chewbacca... What a wookie!
Here's another mini painting I whipped up this morning. Chewie's hanging out at docking bay 94 looking like his usual bad-ass self.

Greek Chuck
The topic for The Austin Sketch Squad this week was Chuck Norris in Greek Mythology. In this pottery shard, we can clearly see Chuck Norris beheading Medusa with his famous round-house kick. Chuck Norris is so tough he could stare Medusa in the eye and not turn to stone.

WIP - Bunny Hunt Pub Crawl
This is part of a t-shirt design I'm working on for an Easter pub crawl the Huns RFC is hosting next month in Austin. She'll be leaning on the lettering. I'll post the final once they get the complete bar list to me. (Oh, and for those with eagle eyes, I've added her eyebrow since I scanned the drawing, hence the 'work in progress') :)

I'm really having a blast doing the Star Wars paintings. I'm definitely going to have to do some more, then go on to some other geek subjects for a little variety. DId I mention I'll have these with me at Staple! next weekend? :)

Tusken Raider
I'm going to start doing small paintings for a while. With the economy the way it is art may not be a priority purchase for most folks, so I'm doing small paintings that are less than a hundred dollars. Also, they're a lot of fun to paint. I'm hoping they'll catch on.
I'll have them with me at Staple! next weekend in Austin. I'll post more as I get them done.
