Halloween Closing...

Well, Christopher and I had our show closing party Sunday night. It was fun. Some people dressed up, some ice cream was eaten, and a good time was had by all. Here are a few pics for your viewing pleasure...

I was at Starbucks tonight drawing with some friends. My buddy Joe was drawing zombies and inspired me to do the same. So, here's my 15 minute zombie. He's a little worse for wear. Eating brains is a lot harder when you're missing your lower jaw. Bone Apetite!

Finally!...

I can post this! For those of you who are Fables fans, I got to do a print for Austin Books & Comics to help celebrate Remembrance Day. Bill Willingham (creator fo Fables) and Matt Sturges (writer of Jack of Fables) were on hand to sign comics and prints.

I got to spend a little time with them over the past couple of days. They're really great guys and I really enjoyed getting to know them a little. So, without further ado, here's the art I did for the print...

Busy...

Sorry I haven't posted for a few days. I'm working on a cool project for Austin Books. Bill Willingham and two of the artists of Fables are coming into town for a signing. Brad's commissioned me to do a Fables-esque print for the event. I'm really excited. If you're a Fables fan, you should definitely go to this event. It's Saturday the 21st from 7:30-11:30. Storyline...

Well, I got a story line. I've downloaded most of my reference photos, so I'm feeling pretty good. It's a WWII story set in the South Pacific. I'll elaborate more later. Gotta get back to work. I should start having some images in the next couple of posts.

OK, 24 hour comic book has begun... and I'm posting about it online intead of getting started. Aaaaaaaaah! Must get to work....

What was I thinkin'?

Well, I'll be joining the comic book lemmings this year and jumping off the cliff of no sleep. That's right! I'm attempting to do 24 hour Comic Book Day at Austin books and Comics tomorrow. Wish me luck! I'll have my laptop with me, so I'll try and make a couple of posts if I get a chance. Feel free to drop by if you're in the area.

Now I'm going to take a nap and try and charge up for tomorrow.

Small World...

I'm watching the Hisory Channel, and lo-and-behold Marsh Mokhtari, a guy I played rugby with in Santa Monica, is hosting this show called Death Road. Really random. Maybe playing for the Santa Monica Dolphins is good karma or something. Heck, a year-and-a-half after I played for them I got my gig as an animater on A Scanner Darkly. Other players that did well are Billy Campbell (The Rocketeer) and Johnny Lee Miller (Hackers, Trainspotting). They weren't playing by the time I joined the team though. Small world. Wierd. Just thought I'd share.

The Bride...

Holy Crap! I finally finished The Bride of Frankenstein pin-up late last night. Now I just have to go hang it at Amy's and I'll be done hanging my show. Hope y'all like it.

BoogieMan...

Woohoooooo! The show has been hung. I just have to finish up the Bride of Frankenstein, and I'll be completely done. I think the show came out nice. The difference in Christopher's style from mine works really well. I'm really excited. If you're in Austin, go by and check it out after Wednesday. I should have my last painting up by then.

Beginning Bride...

Well, I got a decent start on the Bride of Frankenstein pin-up. The face is always the hardest part. I'll probably have to hang this one a day late.:( I hate having to do that. I'll post another pic tomorrow or Monday.

Werewolf? There. There wolf...

Woohoo! I finished the samurai werewolf. I think it came out pretty cool. I think I like the werefox better, but they should look good together. I included a close-up so you could check out some of the detail. There'll be more stuff coming this weekend.

Werewolf...

Here's an in-progress shot of the samurai werewolf. The kanji character on his chest says (appropriately enough) "moon". I'm gonna try and finish this tomorrow. I've got so much work to do before Sunday. I hope I can get it all done.

The Illusionist...

So, my buddy Josh and I went out to dinner at Houstons last night and then went and saw The Illusionist. That movie is freaking fantastic! I really enjoyed it. It's simple, well made and well acted. Edward Norton is very good, but Paul Giamatti(sp?) was exceptional as the chief of police. Another thing that was subtle, but very well done, was the overall look of the movie. The colors were slightly desaturated, and the edges of the screen were slightly blurred and darkened. It really gave the feel of watching something from a completely different time.

Go see it!

Foxy! Finished!

I finished the werefox. I'm really happy with how it came out. The lighting on the photos is horrible. I'll post better ones once I do a proper photo shoot for the show. The piece is 15"x20", Prismacolor markers on Strathmore art board. I also included a close up of some of the kimono patterns for those who might find that sort of thing interesting.

Gettin' There...

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I went to Dallas last weekend and I've had to do some paying work this week. I should be wrapping this up in the next day or two. Gotta let the paint dry a little. Hopefully I'll have some progress to show on one of the 'were-'paintings next.

Samurai Werewolf...

Yes, they actually exist in Japanese mythology. Here's the sketch for a piece I'm doing for my Halloween Show. This will be in ink and washes. I'm also going to do a complimentary piece of a werewolf. Hope you like it.

Quentin Tarantino...

Quentin Tarantino is filming in Austin right now. I was just on my scooter and saw him walking down the street near the Texas Chili Parlor. The best I could come up with was "Hey Tarantino, you rule man!". He gave me a friendly, somewhat befuddled smile and said "Hey..... thanks.. man...".

I'm such a tool. I meet someone famous and my brain short circuits. Oh well.

Creature Sketch...

So, one of the drawbacks of working in oils is that sometimes you have to take a break and let things dry. While I'm waiting for my headless horseman to dry a little, I worked up the sketch for my next halloween painting... The Creature From the Black Lagoon. Just imagine this dude hanging out watching you next time you go swimming in a lake or something. Creepy.

Halloween is Coming! Halloween is Coming!

Why am I so excited? Well my friend Christopher and I are doing a joint Halloween themed show at Amy's Ice Cream that will be up for the entire month of October. It should be a pretty cool show. We have very different styles and we're each doing 3 pieces that have the same subject matter. It'll be interesting to see what each of us comes up with. I'll post more details as I have them.

In the mean time, here's an in-progress shot of my first piece for the show.

'Scanner' Portraits

OK, so (as I mentioned in my last post) I've decided to start taking commissions for Scanner Darkly style portraits. What qualifies this yahoo to do this, you ask? Well, I was a bonafide animator on the motion picture. I've also had enough time off from working on the movie that I'm no longer sick of working in this style.

Here are a few samples of what the end result looks like...

The top two are portraits I've done, the third is a still from a scene I animated in the movie.

I'm asking $100 per portrait. Why so much you ask? Well, aside from being a little time intensive, you get a JPEG of the finished portrait, plus a vector version (EPS, unless you specify otherwise) that you can have printed as large as you want and get it framed. These things look really awesome when printed on a good printer.

What I'll need from you is a good quality digital photo. E-mail it to me at jasonp@manlyart.com . Please make sure the file is no larger than 1 MB. Zip files are fine, so you can send a better quality photo. After we've discussed what you want, you can send a payment by PayPal and you'll have your portrait within the next week or two. It's easy.

Yes, I'm still amongst the living...

Hopefully this will make up for the complete lack of posting lately. Things are starting to settle down a little bit.

For today's treat I have a "Scanner" style portrait I did for a friend of mine. As I was doing the portrait I saved out in-progress shots and put them together in a quicktime so can see how the portrait progressed. It's kind of cool.

If anyone is interested, I'm taking commissions for portraits in this style. You'll get a JPEG and an EPS (so you can have it printed out at any size). I'm thinking $100 for a one person portrait, more than one person we can negotiate. Drop me an e-mail if you're interested.
