Sold!!!

I sold the Headless Horseman painting last night! Woohoo! Thanks Steve, you rock!

10.01.2006

BoogieMan...

Woohoooooo! The show has been hung. I just have to finish up the Bride of Frankenstein, and I'll be completely done. I think the show came out nice. The difference in Christopher's style from mine works really well. I'm really excited. If you're in Austin, go by and check it out after Wednesday. I should have my last painting up by then.

Here's one of the final pieces for the show. It's my disco BoogieMan. He's kind of cute in a hideous, awkward kind of way.

Postcard...

Here's the front and back of the postcard for my show. It gives all the info you need. Swing by and check it out if you get a chance.
Must... sleep...

btw- For those that don't know us, Christopher's the one in glasses, I'm the one getting dragged out of the booth. Altering photos is fun.

Beginning Bride...

Well, I got a decent start on the Bride of Frankenstein pin-up. The face is always the hardest part. I'll probably have to hang this one a day late.:( I hate having to do that. I'll post another pic tomorrow or Monday.

9.29.2006

Werewolf? There. There wolf...

Woohoo! I finished the samurai werewolf. I think it came out pretty cool. I think I like the werefox better, but they should look good together. I included a close-up so you could check out some of the detail. There'll be more stuff coming this weekend.

9.28.2006

Werewolf...

Here's an in-progress shot of the samurai werewolf. The kanji character on his chest says (appropriately enough) "moon". I'm gonna try and finish this tomorrow. I've got so much work to do before Sunday. I hope I can get it all done.

9.26.2006

Creature from the Black Lagoon

Another painting down! WooHoo! Hope you like it. This one's 12"x24". Oil on a GessoBoard Cradle.

9.24.2006

The Illusionist...

So, my buddy Josh and I went out to dinner at Houstons last night and then went and saw The Illusionist. That movie is freaking fantastic! I really enjoyed it. It's simple, well made and well acted. Edward Norton is very good, but Paul Giamatti(sp?) was exceptional as the chief of police. Another thing that was subtle, but very well done, was the overall look of the movie. The colors were slightly desaturated, and the edges of the screen were slightly blurred and darkened. It really gave the feel of watching something from a completely different time.

Go see it!

Better Pics

Here are some better pics of 2 of my Halloween pieces. I should have some new stuff showing up in the next few days.

9.22.2006

Foxy! Finished!

I finished the werefox. I'm really happy with how it came out. The lighting on the photos is horrible. I'll post better ones once I do a proper photo shoot for the show. The piece is 15"x20", Prismacolor markers on Strathmore art board. I also included a close up of some of the kimono patterns for those who might find that sort of thing interesting.

9.21.2006

Foxy!

Here's an in-progress of the werefox. I'll hopefully have this done sometime tomorrow. Hope you like it!

9.20.2006

Gettin' There...

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I went to Dallas last weekend and I've had to do some paying work this week. I should be wrapping this up in the next day or two. Gotta let the paint dry a little. Hopefully I'll have some progress to show on one of the 'were-'paintings next.

9.14.2006

Samurai Werewolf...

Here's the sketch for the companion piece to the Werefox. I don't know if they have werewolves in Japanese mythology, but I thought it might be a cool idea. Enjoy!

9.13.2006

Creature In-progress...

Here's my Creature From the Black Lagoon painting in progress. I think it might come out pretty cool.

9.12.2006

Werefox...

Yes, they actually exist in Japanese mythology. Here's the sketch for a piece I'm doing for my Halloween Show. This will be in ink and washes. I'm also going to do a complimentary piece of a werewolf. Hope you like it.

9.11.2006

Headless Horseman...

Holy Crap! I finished it. Hope y'all like it. (I'll post a better photo later in the week. The lighting's not great.)

Approximately 24"x 39.5"

9.08.2006

So cool...

I really wish I had a couple grand laying around. Jackson Publick has a Dunny in the Kid Robot Paint Ball. How freakin' rad is that thing? They're selling them on e-bay. If you're feeling generous, my birthday's coming up in a couple of weeks. ;)

9.03.2006

Punkin' Haid...

Well, since I'm going to have to let it dry for a couple of days, I thought I show y'all one more in-progress shot before I finish the painting. Enjoy!

9.02.2006

Quentin Tarantino...

Quentin Tarantino is filming in Austin right now. I was just on my scooter and saw him walking down the street near the Texas Chili Parlor. The best I could come up with was "Hey Tarantino, you rule man!". He gave me a friendly, somewhat befuddled smile and said "Hey..... thanks.. man...".

I'm such a tool. I meet someone famous and my brain short circuits. Oh well.

More Halloween Goodness...

Another preliminary sketch. This one's for The Bride of Frankenstein. Enjoy!

8.31.2006

Creature Sketch...

So, one of the drawbacks of working in oils is that sometimes you have to take a break and let things dry. While I'm waiting for my headless horseman to dry a little, I worked up the sketch for my next halloween painting... The Creature From the Black Lagoon. Just imagine this dude hanging out watching you next time you go swimming in a lake or something. Creepy.

Headless Horseman...

Here's an in-progress shot of my headless horseman portrait. I'm kind of excited to see this one finished.

8.30.2006

Moral Midgetry!

My buddy Brian has a new blog. Go check it out. He's already off to a very good start... Moral Midgetry.

8.24.2006

OK Go

Ok. This video makes me happy. So happy I just bought the album.

8.21.2006

Halloween is Coming! Halloween is Coming!

Why am I so excited? Well my friend Christopher and I are doing a joint Halloween themed show at Amy's Ice Cream that will be up for the entire month of October. It should be a pretty cool show. We have very different styles and we're each doing 3 pieces that have the same subject matter. It'll be interesting to see what each of us comes up with. I'll post more details as I have them.

In the mean time, here's an in-progress shot of my first piece for the show.

8.19.2006

Irregardless

Holy Cow! I'm so excited. My buddy, Brian Baker, just got his advance copies of his new book with the cover I did for him. I can't wait to get my hands on one.

It's a great book. Everyone should encourage their local booksellers and libraries to order it. You can visit Brian's site for more information about the book. Here's part of a letter Brian sent out with all the info you'll need to get bookstores and libraries to order his book...

Amazon.com will have copies for sale (not pre-sale, though. Sorry, small press), you can purchase copies directly from the publisher at Crossquarter.com (not pre-sale, though. Sorry, small press), or you can go into your local bookstore and buy one. If your local bookstore doesn’t have a copy ask them to order one. In fact, even if you have a copy ask the bookstore to order one. If you don’t pick it up, they will put it on the shelf for someone else to enjoy. The store might ask for the ISBN number, it’s 978-1-890109-82-0 (1-890109-82-7).
“Gee,” you think, “that sounds cumbersome. Anything else I can do for you?”
Thanks for asking, yes. Please ask your local library to order a copy. Also, I’ll need reviews on Amazon.com – even if you didn’t like it, a review is a review. Speaking of reviews, if you happen to have contacts with any local press or ideas of places that might like to review such a title, please let me know.

'Scanner' Portraits

OK, so (as I mentioned in my last post) I've decided to start taking commissions for Scanner Darkly style portraits. What qualifies this yahoo to do this, you ask? Well, I was a bonafide animator on the motion picture. I've also had enough time off from working on the movie that I'm no longer sick of working in this style.

Here are a few samples of what the end result looks like...

The top two are portraits I've done, the third is a still from a scene I animated in the movie.

I'm asking $100 per portrait. Why so much you ask? Well, aside from being a little time intensive, you get a JPEG of the finished portrait, plus a vector version (EPS, unless you specify otherwise) that you can have printed as large as you want and get it framed. These things look really awesome when printed on a good printer.

What I'll need from you is a good quality digital photo. E-mail it to me at jasonp@manlyart.com . Please make sure the file is no larger than 1 MB. Zip files are fine, so you can send a better quality photo. After we've discussed what you want, you can send a payment by PayPal and you'll have your portrait within the next week or two. It's easy.

8.09.2006

Yes, I'm still amongst the living...

Hopefully this will make up for the complete lack of posting lately. Things are starting to settle down a little bit.

For today's treat I have a "Scanner" style portrait I did for a friend of mine. As I was doing the portrait I saved out in-progress shots and put them together in a quicktime so can see how the portrait progressed. It's kind of cool.

If anyone is interested, I'm taking commissions for portraits in this style. You'll get a JPEG and an EPS (so you can have it printed out at any size). I'm thinking $100 for a one person portrait, more than one person we can negotiate. Drop me an e-mail if you're interested.

jasonp@manlyart.com

So, the first image is the original photo, and the second one is the "Scannerized" version...

And here's the QuickTime...

7.06.2006

Still Alive...

Hey Gang, just a quick post to let you know I'm still among the living. I had kind of an unexpected move that's been keeeping me pretty busy. Hopefully I'll be back in the saddle pretty soon!

6.18.2006

Irregardless, Part 2

Well, I finished the cover yesterday. Woohoo! I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Most importantly, my buddy Brian is happy with it. Without any further ado, here it is...

What's coming next, you ask? I'm doing a sculpture of Brock Samson from The Venture Brothers animated series. It's coming along nicely. I'm taking in-progress shots, so I can let you in on the fun. Yay! I'll try and post some stuff tomorrow or Tuesday.

Manly Art Site Update...

Hey Folks,

Sorry I've been MIA for a while. I've been busy trying to finish up that book cover and I've finally made some necessary updates to my website. Check it out! Manly Art

6.04.2006

Irregardless, Part 1

So, I'm doing a book cover for my friend Brian's first novel. It's call Irregardless. It's really a great book. It's getting published this fall. I'll try and get a little synopsis from him to post. I doubt I could give you the low-down on the book as well as he could.

Anyway... I thought I'd share my process with you. I'm doing it a little differently than I normally would. It's a group shot... (here are the comp sketches the publisher approved)

I'm doing the main characters as separate sketches and will composite all the elements in photoshop to get the final tight drawing. I'll start posting the character sketches later today.

6.02.2006

It is done...

Well, the opening went well last night. Thanks to everyone that made it out! I really had a blast visiting with everyone. I'm also happy to say that I sold Dogfight, Part 1. Many thanks to the Bowdens. You guys rock!

6.01.2006

Opening Tonight!

My show opens this evening at Amy's Ice Cream at 6th & Lamar. I'll be there from 8 'till probably Midnight, when they close. If you're in Austin, I hope to see you there!

5.31.2006

Time Flies....

Well, I just finished up the sneaky robot piece. I'll be hanging my show tomorrow and have the opening night "gala" tomorrow evening. I'll post photos tomorrow once everything is hung. I hope to see you tomorrow night!

Dogfight Part 2

Well, here's the companion piece to Dogfight Part 1. It is ever so cleverly named Dogfight Part 2. Hope you like it!

Dogfight Part 2, Ink on Paper. 14"x17".

p.s.- Don't forget! My show is opening this Thursday at Amy's Ice Cream @ 6th and Lamar. Hope to see you there at 8!

5.29.2006

Memorial Day

Howdy folks! I hope everyone had a fun, safe memorial day weekend.

Sad news... as many of you may know, Alex Toth, comic book artist, designer of Space Ghost and many other characters, passed away yesterday. Thanks for all the wonderful art Alex, you'll be missed.

On a brighter note, I'll be finishing the 'Sneaky' piece tomorrow as well as the companion drawing to Dogfight #1. I should be posting them tomorrow afternoon some time.

Home Stretch

Sorry for going so long between posts. I had to get invites out and take a defensive driving course. But, now I'm back at the easel. I should have this one done sometime today and I'm going to try and have another one done before I hang my show next week. Wish me luck!

5.18.2006

Sneaky Sneaky, Part 2

So, I've made some more progress on my new painting. I really like how this one is turning out. I should have another "in-progress" post either tonight or tomorrow. Enjoy!

Approx. 24"x 39.5"

Leapin' Lizards!

I got back from Chicago a couple of days ago. My buddy Brian and I went to the Shedd Aquarium. They had this really cool lizard exhibit in addition to beluga whales, dolphins and various other seafaring critters. A few of the lizard highlights are below.

Just to give you a sense of scale, the first two images are of a komodo dragon. That sucker is at least 7 to 8 feet long and weighs in at about 140 pounds. I imagine they must feed it villagers or something.

5.12.2006

Sneaky Sneaky

Here's another painting in progress. I'm really enjoying getting back into oils. I feel like I'm getting the hang of it. I'll post more next week after I get back from Chicago and get some more done. Have a great weekend!

Done!!!

WooHooo! I finally finished her! I'm pretty happy with how she came out. Enjoy!

Cool Swag...

OK. My buddy Ben, who works at Disney, is a god among men.

I came home from CAPE to find these sweet t-shirts waiting for me...

Yes,... it's OK to drool.

CAPE: The Aftermath

Well, I just got back from CAPE a couple of hours ago. I had a really fun time. It was great hanging out with friends both old and new. The after party was really cool. They had a live art jam. All the artists were invited to get up and do large drawings for the audience while a DJ was spinning. There are some seriously talented artists out there! Once I get settled back in, I'll post some links to some of them.

I did a few sketches, but I only remembered to take a photo of one of them. D'oh! This guy had a great theme for his sketch book... MAD SCIENTISTS... here's my mad robot scientist... although I'm not sure what's mad about him... except maybe he's a robot wearing black rubber gloves and a smock...?

p.s.- Thanks to the Strathmore rep who gave me the free sketchbook. You sir, are a rock star!
